He retired in 1928, after which time, his son and namesake, Toombs McLendon, Jr., took over operations of the mortuary. From his early adulthood, Toombs was actively involved in the undertaking industry. His start in the mortician's business was as an embalmer for a white funeral parlor. In 1883, Toombs ventured out on his own and opened the McLendon Funeral Home in Washington, Georgia.
